Telegram is one popular messaging platform that lets chat with friends, family and colleagues with encryption to all of your Telegram conversations.
There is no doubting it that sometimes you feel like going off a platform for certain reason, and Telegram is no exempted from such messaging app you may want to delete. For whatever reason you want to get rid of your Telegram account, this post helps you on way to go about deleting your Telegram.
Deactivating your Telegram account means you are going to be inactive from the account. One thing Telegram does is that, it wipes your account if you have been inactive on the platform for 6 months.
After the six months of inactive, Telegram will erase your account. But then, Telegram gives you opportunity to adjust the time it takes them to deactivate your account.
For instance, against the six months, you can choose a month, three months or one year.
Once it is time according your setting, your Telegram will deactivate and be deleted.
To do this;
1. Tap on the “Menu” – the three horizontal bar lines at the top left corner of the app.
2. Select “Settings”
3. Tap on “Privacy & Security”
4. Scroll to the “Delete my Account” section of the app.
5. Now, tap on the “If Away for” option and select the period of inactivity after which Telegram will get your account deleted and deactivated by itself.
Telegram does not give you the opportunity to deactivate Telegram account temporarily. Instead, the only option is for you to leave your Telegram profile inactive, otherwise you may want to uninstall the Telegram app from your phone, and that way you will be inactive.
Once you go inactive and the duration you have set for self-delete elapses, your account will be deleted.
If you do not have the patience to follow the automatic Telegram account delete option where you set the time for which Telegram deletes your account after a certain period of inactivity – say one month, six month or one year. Telegram lets you delete your account instantly.
Remember, you can follow the guide above to set the duration after which Telegram deletes your account automatically. Otherwise follow the guide in this section.
Note, while Telegram allows you delete your account instantly, you cannot do this on Telegram mobile app, instead you will need to use the Telegram web, and this works only on desktop browser or mobile browser.
To delete your Telegram Account, follow the guide below;
1. Go to Telegram web page
2. Enter your Telegram account phone number. Make sure you type in the number using the international number format.
3. Click “Next”
Telegram will send you a confirmation code on your Telegram (not via SMS). So make sure you have access to your Telegram account on the Telegram app to be able to get this code.
4. Type in the confirmation code into the “Confirmation code” field on the Telegram web page.
5. Click “Sign In”
6. On the next page, click on “Delete Account”
7. In the next field, write down why you are leaving Telegram.
8. Click the “Delete My Account”
9. The Telegram prompt will want to confirm your final decision, simply select “Yes, Delete My Account”.
10. Your account will be deleted, and that will just be it.

When you delete your Telegram account, all your messages and chats will be deleted. All your Telegram data will be deleted including your Telegram contacts and your account will be permanently terminated.

If you created any group on Telegram, you will no longer have access to them, but they will still be live and functioning, and all the existing admins will still have their privileges. If you are the only admin of such group, Telegram will simply pick a random active member as the new admin.

Now you know what the implications when you delete your Telegram account, you will make your decisions right. And this is not for users who want to clear their chat conversations on Telegram. Thus, if you want to clear your conversations on Telegram, just select the chats you would like to delete by long-pressing on the chat.
Tap the “Trash bin” at the top to remove the highlighted conversation or chat.
While Telegram does not give you the opportunity to shut down your account temporarily, it allows you export your data from the desktop. This is to enable you access to some conversations you may like to save for future purposes.
This option is very helpful and necessary because once you delete your Telegram account, you cannot reverse the action. Thus, you cannot revive your account or have access to the account or any of your messages and chat again once you delete your account.
To use the “Export” feature, install Telegram app on your computer and login your account.
Click the three-bar menu in the top-right corner to see the menu list.
Click “Settings”
Scroll down to “Export Telegram Data” and select it.
Select the type of data you will like to export. Here you can select which chats or conversations you want to export, and whether you want to exclude group chats, whether the archive should include or exclude videos or GIFs, the export format and many other options.
There is even an option for you to download only stickers you have sent to your contacts in the past.
When you have selected what you want to export, go ahead and click “Export”.
Once you click “Export”, Telegram will complete the extraction and export in few minutes depending on the size of the data.
When you are done, click “Show My Data” to view the file.
If you want to be off Telegram for a while, without deleting your account, then it may be best to uninstall and delete your Telegram app from your phone. When you delete or uninstall Telegram app, you will not be able to login your Telegram, you cannot the app.
When you cannot access your Telegram app because you uninstall it, you cannot send messages, read, send or receive Telegram chats.

1. Open your mobile phone, and look for Telegram app among the phone menu.
2. Once you find your Telegram app, long-press on it.
3. From the options, select “Uninstall” or “Remove” depending on your phone.
4. Confirm your action and have your Telegram app uninstalled from your phone.
Once this is done, your Telegram app will be removed from your phone, and this way, you will not have access to your Telegram messages and chats. And when your contacts send you messages, it will not deliver because you not active on the app.
