Gilbert Baker, a San Franscisco-based activist and artist best recognized and known for creating the rainbow flag representing gay rights has died at the age of 65!
Gilbert Baker, who created the rainbow flag that became an iconic symbol of the LGBT rights movement, has sadly passed away.
The 65-year-old gay rights activist died on Thursday (March 30), according to his friend, activist and author Cleve Jones.
“I am heartbroken. My dearest friend in the world is gone. Gilbert gave the world the Rainbow Flag; he gave me forty years of love and friendship. I can’t stop crying. I love you forever Gilbert Baker,” Cleve wrote on his Facebook page.
Gilbert originally created the flag after being tasked by friend Harvey Milk to make banners for gay and antiwar street protests.
And his first flag flew on June 25, 1978 during the San Francisco Gay Freedom Day Parade.
