The fundamental role of a police officer is about commitment to public service. Toronto Police Service Career Key Responsibilities

• Conducting a full and thorough investigation of offences;
• Preparing for and attending court, a hearing or inquiry to give evidence;
• Providing support immediately after an incident, which can victimize, traumatize, or create concern for a neighbourhood and its residents; and
• Being proactive and using information, evidence, and insights from neighbourhood partners to identify issues and co-develop solutions, including referrals to appropriate community resources, to name a few.

Toronto Police Service Career Requirement

• Be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada;
• Be at least 18 years of age;
• Be physically and mentally able to perform the duties of the position, having regard to your own safety and the safety of members of the public;
• Have successfully completed at least four years of secondary school education or its equivalent (Note: official transcripts and diplomas will be required). Where education has been completed outside Ontario, official proof of equivalency must be obtained by contacting the Ontario Ministry of Education and Training;
• Be of a good moral character and habits, meaning that you are an individual that other people would look upon as being trustworthy and having integrity; and
• Be able to pass a security clearance as well as background investigation, which includes education, employment, personal history, credit and reference checks, as well as a home visit.

If you have any criminal convictions under a federal statute, you must obtain a pardon. If you have ‘Findings of Guilt’ which have resulted in absolute or conditional discharges, the records must be ‘sealed’ by the RCMP. (This will be done automatically following one year if the absolute discharge is registered after July 24, 1992. For a conditional discharge, this will be done automatically following three years if the conditional discharge is registered after July 24, 1992. Otherwise you must apply to have these records sealed.)

Licence and Certification Requirements:

• A current and valid Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police (OACP) Certificate of Results;
• A valid driver’s licence with a good driving record, permitting you to drive an automobile in Ontario with full driving privileges;
• Valid Standard First Aid Certificate from an accredited agency; and
• Valid CPR Certificate, level “C” from an accredited agency.

In addition, the Toronto Police Service values the following qualifications:

• Completed post-secondary education
• Two (2) years’ experience working or volunteering in community programs, with a preference for programs supporting the socially and economically disadvantaged and/or marginalized members of the community
• Demonstrated knowledge, understanding and appreciation for equity, human rights, and the importance of diversity and inclusion in all communities
• Understanding of local community safety and justice-related issues
• Strong interpersonal relationship and problem-solving skills
• Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and make decisions in complex and potentially dangerous and stressful conditions
• Fluency in English, both written and verbal
• Ability to speak and write fluently in a second language
