Twitter Changes Default Egg Avatar – Twitter has just decided to make a change that got a lot of people buzzing on the social media. The change is about the popular default “egg avatar” which has come to mean sign of harassment to many and even much more.

This has always, served as even default photo for people who just signed up new on the platform.
Over the past seven years though, the meaning of the ubiquitous Twitter egg has spun out of the company’s control.

As anyone who spends time on Twitter knows, the accounts with egg avatars are often the worst offenders. Harassers and bots tend to prefer to be eggs.

Eggs became so symbolic of abusive behavior that it was possible to use the two terms interchangeably. “My mentions are full of eggs,” meant the same thing as “A bunch of people are harassing me right now.”

A number of users also clung to their eggs for sentimental or privacy reasons.

Some kept them involuntarily, because they had no idea how to change their profile photo. Last year, Twitter stopped requiring users to upload a custom picture when they set up a new account because it created such an issue for new users, Fast Company reported.

Starting Friday, the default profile photo is now a so-called “gender-balanced figure.” This is in favor of making a more generic default icon.

Twitter cites several reasons for the change, including encouraging users to switch to an image more reflective of their personality. But one reason for the switch is the association with online abuse.

“We’ve noticed patterns of behavior with accounts that are created only to harass others – often they don’t take the time to personalize their accounts,” reads an excerpt from a Twitter blog post explaining the change.”

“This has created an association between the default egg profile photo and negative behavior, which isn’t fair to people who are still new to Twitter and haven’t yet personalized their profile photo.”

But the question is changing what a harasser’s photo also change their actual behavior?

Many has suggested that Twitter focus on other areas that they think need changes – saying changing  the appearance of the egg avatar should not be the company’s priority…
