What is SpaceX’s Second High – Altitude Starship Test Flight Is Possible To Happen Today

SpaceX violated the terms of its launch license, triggering an investigation and delaying the next test originally scheduled for January 28th. SpaceX has announced that it will attempt its second high-altitude Starship test today.

There will be a live feed of the flight test available here that will start a few minutes prior to liftoff. Given the dynamic schedule of development testing, stay tuned to our social media channels for updates as we move toward SpaceX’s second high-altitude flight test of Starship!

SpaceX claimed its first high-altitude Starship launch test a success despite the explode-y landing. It’s not clear what SpaceX did wrong that violated its license. At the time, the FAA said it “will not compromise its responsibility to protect public safety,” adding that “we will approve the modification only after we are satisfied that SpaceX has taken the necessary steps to comply with regulatory requirements.”

What happened to SpaceX’s Starship prototype during their latest test flight?

But when the prototype fired its engines to right itself back to a vertical orientation, it appeared that one engine did not properly ignite, and Starship hit the ground at an angle, disintegrating in a fireball, leaving a cloud of smoke rising over the test site, which is in Boca Chica, Tex., near Brownsville.

Is SpaceX Starship possible?

Musk has suggested that SpaceX could launch as many as a dozen Starship test flights in 2022, with missions to the moon and Mars both on the horizon—and plenty of scientific potential to boot.

Another SpaceX Starship nails clean test flight, but explodes on landing

SpaceX’s latest Starship prototype launched on Tuesday, soaring miles above its South Texas facilities in a successful flight demonstration before exploding during the landing attempt. It’s the second failed landing in a row, after a previous prototype, SN8, launched and failed to stick the landing in December.

This week’s launch demo — one of many in the books already — follows weeks of tension between SpaceX and the Federal Aviation Administration, which approves test launches like this one.

During its high-altitude test launch with SN8 two months ago, the company violated its FAA launch license. This triggered an investigation that held up today’s SN9 flight and frustrated SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, The Verge reported last week.
